Shuttle-Mir Background - Competition and Cooperation before Shuttle-Mir

The launch of Sputnik 1 ("Satellite") by the Soviet Union in 1957 ignited the famous competition called the "space race." But there were early, tentative efforts at cooperation. These are discussed in a short 1978 NASA report by historians Edward Clinton Ezell and Linda Neuman Ezell, available in this web site in PDF format.
