To support the astronauts, scientists and engineers working in Russia, NASA created the Director of Operations - Russia (DOR). The DOR also served as NASA's on-the-scene representative to the Russian trainers and managers.
This position was staffed by NASA astronauts, many of whom also flew to Mir onboard shuttles. DORs generally stayed in Russia for six month tours. They lived and worked in a dormitory, called the "Prophy," or Prophylactorium, which the Russians have historically used for cosmonauts returning from spaceflights
