Shuttle-Mir Stories - Thomas on Mir Food

In his Oral History, U.S. Mir astronaut Andy Thomas discusses food onboard Mir.

He says, "There was an abundance of food up there. I had my choice of American food and Russian food, much more food than I could eat. It was really a good selection of food, actually. The food is largely canned food and rehydratable foods, much like you might use on a camping trip or something like that, and I had more than enough to eat.

"The Russian foods were really good. The Russian soups were just outstanding, and the Russian ... fruit juices, were really good. They had a very nice natural taste ... perhaps more so than the American fruit juices, which tend to be a little bit artificial, Tang-type things. So I really enjoyed the food that was available to me."

Thomas says that two unmanned Progress resupply vehicles arrived during his stay on Mir, and inside them, "people would put letters and photographs and things from home ... for me, plus treats ... some fresh fruit, some fresh vegetables. And [I] got a nice big bag of M&Ms, a nice big bag of Oreo cookies -- things like that."
