These are liquid phase sintering samples that were processed on the Mir space station. The samples were made up of powdered forms of two different types of metals like copper and silver. They were placed in a heating furnace, the Optizon furnace, and were allowed to melt together, forming an alloy. Scientists take these samples and study them to better understand how gravity effects alloy formation.
