During the Debris survey of the Space Station Mir, Space Shuttle photography and video noted large areas of external paint damage to the Spektr module. The damage was first visible a month after the module docked to the station and was measured to be approximately 550 cm2. Four months later, the area had increased by over 50%. Photographs like this one help International Space Station designers make decisions on the types of materials that will be used to build the new Space Station.
