Image of a track that illustrates the track morphology termed "cone-in-cone" structure. This particular mode of aerogel failure is poorly understood at present, but is believed to relate to high strain rates within the aerogel. This particular track contains a relative large impactor/projectile residue at the terminus (end) of the track. Higher magnification views (utilizing reflected and transmitted light sources) of the impactor can be seen in the blow-ups.
