Binary Colloidal Alloy Tests (BCAT1 & 2) - MGBX

BCAT Sample

This is a close-up view of a BCAT sample on the Mir Space Station. BCAT samples consisted of different types of colloid mixtures. A colloid is made up of tiny solid particles that are suspended in a liquid. Paint is a good example of a colloid. Colloids were studied in microgravity because the solid particles arrange themselves differently than on Earth. This gives scientists a unique opportunity to make new colloids and study colloidal alloy formation in space.
