Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) Operations

SAMS Sensor Device

Space Acceleration Measurement System (SAMS) sensor device. The SAMS sensor consisted of three sensor heads positioned orthogonally from each other. The SAMS device was mounted to a fixed object, the Microgravity Isolation Mount (MIM), on the Mir Space Station and recorded acceleration changes in the Mir environment. While in Earth orbit, gravitational forces are still present but, the forces are so small they are difficult to detect. A docking event or a crewmember running on a treadmill can produce forces that can cause changes in the Mir's acceleration. The SAMS device is used to characterize these changes.
