Cartilage in Space - BTS

Cartilage Constructs

Biotechnology System (BTS) cell culture module on the Mir Space Station. The BTS unit is designed to provide a facility to conduct biotechnology experiments such as tissue culture, protein crystal growth, and fundamental biotechnology investigations in microgravity. The bioreactor, a cell culture device, can be seen through the window of the BTS. During the NASA-3 research increment, scientists studied cartilage growth in space. The spherical solids suspended in the liquid medium are the cartilage constructs.
