Roger Billica was Medical Operations Working Group Leader, during Shuttle-Mir. In his Oral History, he talks about the importance of having one flight doctor responsible for a NASA Mir astronaut.
Billica says, "It made it so that crew member knew this doctor and was comfortable with him and willing to really work with him when there were problems. It wasn't some strange voice or strange person; it was their flight surgeon. I think that helped a lot when things came up, when the crew member had questions or concerns, for them to feel comfortable, secure, confident that we were going to be able to deal with whatever the situation was."
