Terry Wilcutt visited the Russian Space Station Mir two times: once as a commander and once as a pilot. Wilcutt led the crew of STS-89, aboard the Space Shuttle Endeavour, on the eighth Shuttle-Mir docking mission of the International Space Station's Phase 1 Program. This was the fifth and last exchange of U.S. astronauts on Mir, delivering Andrew Thomas to the station and returning with David Wolf. Wilcutt also served as pilot on the Space Shuttle Atlantis for STS-79, the fourth mission to fly to Mir. On this mission, John Blaha was transported to the Mir for his residency, and Shannon Lucid returned with the crew.
Additionally, Wilcutt was Director of Operations in Star City, Russia, where he was responsible for the coordination and implementation of Phase 1 mission operation activities between Russia and NASA.
Wilcutt became an astronaut in 1991. Prior to his NASA career, Wilcutt taught high school math before entering the United States Marine Corps. He attended the Naval Fighter Weapons School (Topgun) and the United States Naval Test Pilot School. Wilcutt also earned a Bachelor of Arts in math from Western Kentucky University.
