Kvant means "quantum," a name derived from its purpose to provide research in the physics of galaxies, quasars and neutron stars, by measuring electromagnetic spectra and x-ray emissions. Kvant-1 also supported biotechnology experiments. Added to the Mir core module in 1987, the 11.5-ton Kvant-1 measured 4 meters by 13 meters long, with 40 cubic meters of pressurized volume.
