Cultural differences between America and Russia include the treatment of women in society. In her Oral History, U.S. Mir astronaut Shannon Lucid discusses her treatment as a female member of a Mir crew.
She says, "I never did [feel like she was treated differently because she is a female]... I just always felt like I was just being treated as an individual, as myself. As a matter of fact, after I'd been on orbit for a long time, one evening we were talking, and Yuri [Onufriyenko] and Yuri [Usachev] were talking about something. They were [saying] something about Russian women [about why weren't there more females in the Russian Space Program, etc.]... [And] I said, 'Now, you guys, that's not the way that you are, and that's not the way you're treating me.' "They said, 'Oh, but you're an American, so it's okay for American women to do.'"
