Gennady Strekalov Gennady Strekalov

Gennady Strekalov served as the flight engineer on Mir-18, the three-man Mir mission that included the first American, NASA astronaut Norm Thagard. Strekalov, Thagard, and Mir-18 commander Vladimir Dezhurov launched to Mir aboard a Soyuz capsule; they returned to Earth on the Space Shuttle Atlantis on STS-71. It was the first time a Mir crew returned to Earth via the Shuttle.

Strekalov graduated from the N. E. Bauman Moscow Higher Technical School with a diploma in engineering. He has worked as an engineer at RSC Energia since 1965. He began training as a cosmonaut in 1974 and is a veteran of five spaceflights.
